Baby diapers: European Chemicals Agency reports levels of risk in chemicals found are low

The European Chemicals Agency has reported that not enough scientific evidence has been found to conclude that certain chemicals (formaldehyde, PAHs, dioxins, furans, PCBs) found in single-use diapers/nappies post a health and safety risk.

Its Risk Assessment Committee adopted an opinion, taking into account stakeholder consultations, on a French proposal to restrict such substances under the EU’s REACH Regulation 1907/2006 which addresses the production and use of chemical substances, and their potential impacts on both human health and the environment.

That evaluation concluded that the substances are not present at levels that pose a risk, and that data on the amount of some of the substances was inconclusive - therefore
