Ban on Belarusian carriers in EU airspace and to EU airports agreed by Council of EU
The Council of the EU has today decided to strengthen EU sanctions against Belarus by including a ban on flight over EU airspace and on access to EU airports. The decision affects Belarusian carriers of all kinds, and means Member States must deny permission to any aircraft operated by Belarusian air carriers.
This follows the European Council’s conclusions of 24 and 25 May 2021, in which EU Heads of State and Government strongly condemned the unlawful forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk on 23 May 2021 endangering aviation safety - as a result of which Belarusian authorities arrested journalist Mr Roman Pratasevich and Ms Sofia Sapega (see our News update on that here).
