Commission approves Slovenian aid to support rail freight transport in Slovenia

Slovenian state aid scheme promoting rail freight single wagon and combined transport in Slovenia, totaling 15 million euros, has been approved by the European Commission under EU State aid rules.

The support scheme will take the form of direct grants and will run until 31 December 2023. The aid aims at partially covering the external costs avoided, such as accidents, pollution, congestion and climate change.

The Commission particularly assessed the aid measure under Article 93 of TFEU and the 2008 Commission Guidelines on State aid for railway undertakings and found that the support scheme will be beneficial both for the environment and for mobility as it is necessary and proportionate to promote the use of less polluting
