Commission fines three EU railway companies for customer allocation cartel

The European Commission has fined three European railway companies with a total amount exceeding 48 million euros for participating in a customer allocation cartel, in violation of Article 101 TFEU.

According to the Commission’s press release, the companies participated in a customer allocation cartel, concerning cross-border rail cargo transport services in the EU under the freight sharing model and carried out in ‘blocktrains’, and admitted their involvement, agreeing to settle the case. The companies concerned are:

Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB), from Austria; Deutsche Bahn (DB), from Germany; and  Société Nationale des Chemins de fer belges / Nationale Maatschappij der Belgische Spoorwegen (SNCB), from Belgium.
