Commission launches new European Tax Observatory
The European Commission has announced today the launch of the European Tax Observatory, a new research laboratory to assist in the EU’s fight against tax abuse, following an initiative of the European Parliament.
The European Tax Observatory seeks to support EU tax policymaking through independent research, analysis and data-sharing. Its research will mainly focus on the fight against tax evasion and avoidance and the promotion of fairer taxation both in the EU and globally.
The Observatory is headed by Professor Gabriel Zucman, and based at the Paris School of Economics. It will take form as a consortium of academics and will be awarded an EU grant budget of 1.2 million euros for 2020-21 to deepen the research on tax avoidance, tax evasion, and aggressive tax planning, and advise EU policy-makers accordingly.
