Commission opens in-depth investigation into the proposed acquisition of GRAIL by Illumina

The European Commission has opened an in-depth investigation into the proposed acquisition of GRAIL by Illumina. It is concerned that such acquisition could reduce competition and innovation for the development and commercialisation of cancer detection tests based on sequencing technologies.

Following a referral request made in April 2021 by France, Belgium, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands and Norway, the Commission’s preliminary investigation found that the proposed acquisition affects trade within the single market and threatens to significantly affect competition within the territory of the Member States that made the referral request, meeting the criteria for referral under Article 22 of the EU Merger Regulation.
