Commission presents proposal on transparency and targeting of political advertising

The European Commission has presented today a proposal on transparency and targeting of political advertising, as part of its efforts to protect election integrity and open democratic debate.

The new rules seek to allow citizens to be able to clearly distinguish whether they are being presented with paid political content, both online and offline, and to limit some of the negative effects on the democratic process from disinformation, interference and manipulation.

The rules also provide for label obligations so that the name of the sponsor is displayed, together with an easily retrievable transparency notice with the amount spent on the political advertisement, the sources of the funds used, and a link between the advertis
