
Commission proposes European Climate Law and launches consultation on the European Climate Pact
Today, the Commission adopted a proposal for the first ever EU Climate Law. This proposal purports to translate into legal rules the EU’s political commitment to be climate neutral by 2050. It is conceived as the cornerstone of the European Green Deal and aims at offering predictability to public authorities, businesses and citizens.
The proposal includes a legally binding target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, which would oblige the EU Institutions and the Member States to take the necessary measures at EU and national level to meet the target. The Commission’s proposal includes measures to keep track of progress and adjust the actions of EU institutions and of Member States accordingly. Member States will also be r
