Commission proposes measures to counter instrumentalisation of migrants at EU external border

The European Commission has announced a series of measures to counter the trafficking or smuggling of migrants and, more broadly, their instrumentalisation at the EU’s external borders, following the recent Polish border crisis with Belarus.

The Council of the EU has already amended its Belarusian sanctions regime in response to the crisis, which the EU claims is a ‘hybrid attack’ by the Belarusian regime and an attempt to instrumentalise migrants against the bloc. Belarus was accused of facilitating the flow of migrants from the Middle East into its territory in order to redirect them towards the Polish border and create a migration crisis in response to the EU’s sanctions on the Lukashenko regime.
