Commission proposes to end most checks on goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Yesterday, Commission Vice-President Šefčovič delivered a speech outlining the Commission’s new proposal to ensure the continuity of the application of the Ireland/Northern Ireland Protocol included in the EU/UK Withdrawal Agreement, following increasing calls of the UK Government to modify key aspects of the protocol or to trigger Article 16, a safeguard mechanism to suspend its application.

Under the Commission’s new ‘alternative model for the implementation of the Protocol’, up to 80% of checks on animal and plant-based products crossing from Great Britain to Northern Ireland would be scrapped. The rationale behind this is that while intra-UK flow of goods will be facilitated for those goods intended to stay in Northern Ireland
