Commission simplifies State aid rules to facilitate EU’s policy priorities: COVID-19 recovery, and green and digital transitions

So that Member States can implement certain aid measures without prior Commission scrutiny, the European Commission has decided to extend the scope of the General Block Exemption Regulation (GBER). This will reduce the administrative burden where aid is granted (i) for projects funded by certain EU-centrally managed programmes under the Multiannual Financial Framework (based on the fact that there are inbuilt safeguards); and (ii) to support the green and digital transition, and COVID-19 recovery.

This is described as a ‘major simplification’ and ‘streamlining’ of the State aid rules.
