Competition investigation into possible effects on markets for supply of eyewear, lenses and optical products
An in-depth Merger Regulation investigation has been opened to see whether competition for the wholesale supply of ophthalmic lenses, eyewear, and retail supply of optical products would be reduced by the proposed acquisition of GrandVision by EssilorLuxottica.
This is because EssilorLuxottica is the ‘world’s largest supplier of eyewear’ with a strong market position, and GrandVision is the ‘largest optical retail chain’ with a leading presence in retail distribution of these products, an acquisition between them potentially leading to higher prices or reduced choices for consumers.
The investigation will look at whether the strong market presence will be used to raise prices, lower supply conditions for competing retailers, have an impact on retail, limit access to competitors, or reduce choices available for consumers.
A decision on whether there are concerns about infringement of the EU’s competition law rules will be taken at the end of the investigation period, on 22 June 2020.
