Coronavirus: Commission welcomes ECDC guidance on surveillance of COVID-19 in long-term care facilities in the EU

Yesterday, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) published guidance to Member States for the development of COVID-19 surveillance in long-term care facilities. This follows and complements previous ECDC guidance on infection prevention and control and preparedness for COVID-19 in healthcare settings and guidance on a safe return to the workplace issued by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA).

The approach to testing and reporting plays a crucial role in protecting the providers and users of services in long-term care facilities, where COVID-19 related deaths represent 30-60% of all COVID-related deaths in some Member States. The target audience for the ECDC guidance regarding these facilities includes public health experts, healthcare professionals and administrators working in long-term care facilities at local/regional level, and national public health authorities.

The new ECDC guidance, which has been welcomed by the European Commission, can be found here.
