Council paves way for revision of European Ombudsman’s statute

The Council of the EU has given its consent for a revision of the Statute European Ombudsman, which will replace its current legal framework in order to bring it in line with the Lisbon Treaty.

The revision of the Statute comes at the initiative of the European Parliament, which adopted a proposal for a draft Regulation on the performance of the Ombudsman’s duties in February 2019. After informal consultations, the Council has decided to give its consent to the revised Statute, which will repeal the current Decision governing the Ombudsman’s legal framework (Decision 94/262/ECSC).
