Court of Justice rules on the scope of Directive 2000/78 on discrimination in the workplace among the same vulnerable group

In its judgment rendered today in Grand Chamber in the case of VL (C-16/19), the Court of Justice ruled on the scope of Directive 2000/78, establishing a general framework for equal treatment in employment and occupation, on the point of whether a difference of treatment among workers with disabilities is direct or indirect discrimination based on disability. The question raised the matter of whether discrimination within the same vulnerable group, distinguishing among workers with disabilities, constitutes a precluded discrimination pursuant to the Directive.
