Czech Republic requests Court of Justice to impose daily 5 million-euro penalty on Poland in environmental inter-State case

The Court of Justice has announced that the Czech Republic has requested it to impose a daily 5 million-euro penalty on Poland in view of its non-compliance with interim measures granted in May 2021, which ordered Poland to immediately cease lignite extraction activities in the Turów mine near the borders between Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany.

Poland has allegedly continued its extraction activities in the mine, which the Czech Republic believes is contrary to EU law due to a failure to carry out an environmental impact assessment for the extension of the concession under which the mine operates.
