ECtHR: Italy did not breach the right to life of a convicted individual who committed suicide while in prison

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) delivered yesterday its judgment in Fabris and Parziale v. Italy (application no. 41603/13), a case concerning the death of a relative of the applicants while he was in prison. In accordance with experts, the death was the result of deliberately inhaling gas from canisters provided to prisoners for cooking.

The Strasbourg-based court ruled that the right to life under Article 2 of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) had not been breached, either in its substantive or in its procedural content.
