ECtHR’s Grand Chamber to rule on compatibility with human rights of Russian refusal to register notice of marriage of same-sex couples

The Grand Chamber Panel of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has decided to accept the referral to the ECtHR’s Grand Chamber of the case Fedotova and Others v. Russia (applications nos. 40792/10 and 2 others), concerning 

The applicants are six Russian nationals forming three same-sex couples. They gave notice of their intention to marry at their local registry offices in Russia, but their applications were rejected. The Russian courts dismissed their actions against these decisions, arguing that marriage in Russia requires ‘the voluntary consent of a man and a woman’ and that neither the Constitution nor international law recognises any right to same-sex marriage.
