EMA finds possible link between AstraZeneca vaccine and blood clots: common approach among Member States still to be reached

Yesterday evening the Health Ministers of the EU held (by video conference) an informal meeting  to harmonise the positions of the different Member States regarding their vaccination strategies. The meeting took place following yesterday’s public announcement of the conclusions of the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on the COVID-19 vaccine AstraZeneca, now called Vaxzevria, confirming that this vaccine may lead to unusual blood clots with low blood platelets as very rare side effects.

According to EMA’s report yesterday, the currently available evidence (amounting to 86 cases of thrombosis as of 22 March 2021, 18 of which were fatal) shows that these rare events tend to occ
