EP Legal Affairs Committee clears way for action against Commission over Rule of Law Conditionality Regulation

The European Parliament Legal Affairs Committee has cleared the way for action to be taken against the European Commission for not enforcing the Rule of Law Conditionality Regulation (2020/2092) in respect of the recent anti-LGBT legislation in Hungary, after receiving the Commission’s response to its letter of 23 June.

The Parliament had sent a letter to the Commission urging the launch of an accelerated infringement procedure to ensure the application of the rule of law conditionality mechanism. The Commission responded that the Parliament had failed to explain in concrete terms why the procedure established by Article 6 of Regulation 2020/2092 should be activated, and therefore considered that it had not been properly called up
