ESMA: 2020 Report on EU Market Abuse Sanctions
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has published its annual report on administrative and criminal sanctions issued under Regulation 596/2014 (the ‘Market Abuse Regulation’ or ‘MAR’) during the year 2020.
Article 33 of the MAR provides for the obligation of ESMA to publish an annual report with aggregated information on all penalties and measures imposed by national competent authorities.
According to the findings of the Report, national authorities imposed a total of 17.5 million euros in fines related to 541 administrative and criminal actions under the MAR - 262 actions more than in 2019, however, 64.5 million euros less in the amount of financial penalties imposed compared to 2019.
