EU calls on the Hong Kong authorities to reconsider the proposed postponement of Legislative Council elections

Last evening, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell issued a declaration setting out the EU’s position regarding the proposed postponement by one year of the Legislative Council elections in Hong Kong.

The High Representative recalled the Council conclusions of late July and the EU’s view that it is essential that the Legislative Council elections take place in an environment which is conducive to the exercise of democratic rights and freedoms as enshrined in the Hong Kong’s Basic Law. He also reiterated that the protection of civil and political rights in Hong Kong is a fundamental part of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ principle, which the EU supports.
