European Data Protection Supervisor instructs Europol to erase data of persons not linked to criminal activity 

The European Data Protection Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiórowski (EDPS) has ordered Europol to delete data concerning individuals with no established link to criminal activity and limit the retention period to extract critical data to six months.  

On 30 April 2019, the EDPS opened an own-initiative inquiry on the processing of large datasets by Europol for purposes of strategic and operational analysis. In September 2020, the EDPS informed Europol that its continued storage of large volumes of data of individuals not related to a criminal activity poses a risk to fundamental rights.
