European Ombudsman closes inquiry on transparency of advance purchase agreements for Covid-19 vaccines but urges the Commission to reinforce transparency in this area

The European Ombudsman has issued a decision in joint cases 85/2021/MIG and 86/2021/MIG, concluding that no further inquiries are necessary in view of the Commission’s efforts towards greater transparency around the negotiation of advance purchase agreements (APAs) for Covid-19 vaccines and the recent publication of redacted versions of all APAs concluded thus far.

These cases stem from requests for public access to APAs concluded between the European Commission and pharmaceutical companies for the future purchase of COVID-19 vaccines and to other documents related to those negotiations.
