European Ombudsman: New Statute adopted by European Parliament
The European Parliament has adopted (by 623 votes in favour, 9 against, and 61 abstentions) a new Regulation governing the duties, tasks, and functioning of the European Ombudsman, thereby aligning its Statute with the Treaty of Lisbon.
The Regulation has been adopted on the basis of the draft proposed by the European Parliament (which enjoys an exclusive right of initiative in this area). The proposal was given a positive opinion from the Commission and the Council's consent. The new Regulation delineates a stronger, clearer mandate for the European Ombudsman by comparison with the previous rules, which had remained unaltered since before the Treaty of Lisbon.
