European Parliament MEPs call for Commission to investigate media freedom in Member States and provide stronger legal protection under EU rules
A resolution has been adopted by Members of the European Parliament to condemn government silencing of critical and independent media, and underhand efforts to restrict media freedom and pluralism through financing methods. It sets out financial models that could ensure editorial independence, so that journalists can be protected from violence, harassment and pressure.
Specific reference is made to the horrific murder of investigative journalists Daphne Caruana Galizia in Malta and Ján Kuciak and his fiancée in Slovakia as examples.
