First time an insect authorised to be marketed as a ‘novel food’ in the EU
The European Commission’s proposal to allow the use of dried yellow mealworms as a novel food in protein products, cookies or pasta products has been approved today by the Member States, following the scientific assessment of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
This is the first ever EU marketing authorisation of insects as novel foods.
The Commission will now adopt a formal decision in the coming weeks.
