Forest biomass and sustainability feedback: Renewable Energy Directive

The European Commission is accepting feedback from interested parties on the draft rules for demonstrating how forest biomass complies with the sustainability criteria laid down under Article 29 of the recast Renewable Energy Directive (2018/2001).

The Directive entered into force in December 2018, as part of the Clean energy for all Europeans package, to promote renewable energy and as part of the EU’s aims to meet its emissions reduction commitments under the Paris Agreement and own European Green Deal. It sets a new binding renewable energy target for the EU for 2030 of at least 32%.
