Internet of Things: Commission publishes initial findings of competition inquiry

The European Commission published the preliminary results of its competition sector inquiry into markets for Internet of Things (IoT) related consumer products and services in the European Union.

According to the Commission, the sector is growing at a very rapid pace and is expected to have a market size of around 40 billion euros by 2025. However, the Commission highlights that the report has shown that respondents to the sector’s inquiry have concerns over the role of gatekeepers, fearing that they could use their power to harm competition.

The report gathered information from over 200 companies of different sizes, operating in consumer IoT product and services markets and based across Europe, Asia and the United States.
