New President of the European Court of Human Rights

Robert Spano, the Judge in respect of Iceland, has today been elected as the European Court of Human Rights’ (ECtHR) new President. He is taking over from Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos, Judge in respect of Greece.

According to Rule 9 of the ECtHR’s Rules of Procedure, the President of the Court:

  • shall direct the work and administration of the Court.
  • shall represent the Court and, in particular, be responsible for its relations with the authorities of the Council of Europe.
  • shall preside at plenary meetings of the Court, meetings of the Grand Chamber and meetings of the panel of five judges.
  • shall not take part in the consideration of cases being heard by Chambers except where he or she is the judge elected in respect of a Contracting Party concerned
