New report reveals that EU support for rule of law in West Balkans has little impact in reforms

The European Court of Auditors (ECA) has published a special report finding that EU action has had little impact in advancing fundamental rule of law reforms in the Western Balkans.

The EU currently supports and promotes advances in rule of law issues in Western Balkans candidate and potential candidate countries. It does so by means of financial support (amounting to around €700 million between 2014 and 2020) and political dialogue. According to ECA, key risks to the sustainable impact of EU action remain insufficiently mitigated, namely with regard to weak administrative capacity and political will in said countries.
