Ombudsman finds no maladministration by Commission in refusal to provide access to documents concerning rights of volunteer firefighters in France

The European Ombudsman, Emily O’Reilly, has decided recently in Case 1291/2021/DL - concerning the European Commission’s refusal to disclose access to documents concerning volunteer firefighters in France, does not constitute maladministration.

An inquiry into the matter was opened towards the end of July 2021 in response to a complaint from a French trade union that the Commission would not disclose an annex to a letter from the French Interior Minister to a European Commissioner on the how impact of a Court of Justice ruling on working time and rest periods (the reference submitted by a Belgian court) under EU law having a different application in France (Matzak, C-518/15).
