Online providers exempt from restrictions on data processing in order to assist in the combatting of online child sexual abuse: derogation now published

Official publication has been made of Regulation 2021/1232 which provides for a temporary derogation from certain data processing and privacy-protection provisions of the e-Privacy Directive 2002/58 on the use of technologies by providers of ‘number-independent interpersonal communications services’ (such as webmail and messaging services) so that they may assist in the of combatting of online child sexual abuse.

Adopted on 14 July 2021, this Regulation must be read as a follow-up of the EU Strategy for a more effective fight against child sexual abuse, adopted by the Commission on 24 July 2020 with the aim of providing an effective response at EU level to the crime of child sexual abuse.
