The relationship between the European Union and the United States of America has not been particularly warm over the last few years. The last American administration was antagonistic towards the EU and hardly saw the benefits in maintaining close relations. In response, the EU has increasingly pursued an agenda of so-called strategic autonomy, which refers to the EU’s ability to act independently from other global players, such as the US, when necessary.
