Op-Ed: “The New Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021-2030: A Step Forward in Realising the Human Rights Model of Disability” by Delia Ferri

On 3 March 2021, the European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli, presented the new Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021-2030 (hereafter the ‘Strategy’), which lays out the renewed policy framework to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), concluded by the EU through Council Decision 2010/48, and identifies the core tenets of EU disability policies for the next decade. This new Strategy also complements an array of policy initiatives geared towards building what has been termed in Von der Leyen’s agenda a ‘Union of Equality’, such as the LGBTIQ Equality Strategy 2020-2025, the EU Anti-racism Action Plan 2020-2025, the Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 and the EU Roma Stra
