Passenger Name Record agreement: negotiations between the EU and Japan
The Council of the EU has given the go ahead for the European Commission to begin negotiations, on behalf of the EU, with Japan on an agreement that will enable passenger name record data - information given to airlines when booking and checking in for flights - to be transferred from the EU to Japan.
The agreement should set out the framework and conditions for the exchange and use of that data by Japan, including that it should respect fundamental rights and data protection rules in accordance with the Charter of Fundamental Rights.
The Commission must keep the European Parliament and Council of the EU informed of the progress of negotiations.
