Portuguese Judge Guerra Martins sworn in at the European Court of Human Rights

Last week, Ana Maria Guerra Martins was sworn in as the Judge in respect of Portugal at the European Court of Human Rights, which took place by live-video stream (due to the COVID-19 outbreak preventing this occurring in person and publicly), and which has been uploaded to YouTube.

Judge Guerra Martins was formerly a judge at the Portuguese Constitutional Court for nine years. Her mandate at the ECtHR is for a duration of nine years, and commenced as of 1 April 2020. She is the first woman to hold the office since Portugal ratified the European Convention on Human Rights.

Her appointment comes after she was elected by an absolute majority of votes cast at the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly in October 2019.
