Schengen Forum held for the first time: moving freely within the EU

The European Commission has convened the first ever Schengen Forum to take place today by videoconference, including Members of the European Parliament and Home Affairs Ministers, with the aim at preserving and strengthening the Schengen area.

Discussions were held on how to improve the evaluation mechanism of implementation of the Schengen rules and improve the rules themselves, on possible operational improvements, and legislative changes to the mechanism, how to monitor and detect possible deficiencies and effective follow-up.

This is a response to the need to ensure that any possible reintroduction of controls at borders in the future is ‘proportionate, used as a measure of last resort and for a limited period of time’,
