European Green Deal: Parliamentary support and progress

The Plenary of the European Parliament yesterday adopted its position on the European Green Deal, in a resolution adopted with 482 votes for, 136 against and 95 abstentions.

The Parliament expressly welcomes the EU plan to become climate neutral by 2050. It supports an ambitious and sustainable investment plan to help close the investment gap, whilst also calling for an adequately funded just transition mechanism.

MEPs also call for more ambitious targets, including a steeper reduction of the EU’s 2030 goal of emissions, an interim target for 2040, the creation of a WTO-compliant carbon border adjustment mechanism, and higher requirements for energy efficiency and renewable energy.
