State aid for mine closures in Slovakia: approved
State aid for the coal industry is illegal unless it is to facilitate coal mine-closures. Plans to provide EUR 92 million to a coal mining company have been approved as lawful by the Commission in the context of the legislation in question – Council Decision of 2010 regulating closure of uncompetitive mines. The funds will go towards mitigating the negative consequences of shutting down mining units in Handlová and Nováky by 2023, such as by financially supporting workers with redundancy payments, securing mine shafts and recultivating land. This comes over a week after approving EUR 1.79 billion of support for State aid in Poland with the same objectives. There are suggestions elsewhere that there is illegal State aid being provided to the coal industry in Romania.
