State aid recovery decision: incompatible rescue aid given to Romanian National Uranium Company
An in-depth investigation was opened by the Commission in May 2018 to assess whether various public support measures from Romania in favour of the National Uranium Company (CNU) were contrary to EU State aid rules for companies in difficulty, and in particular the Rescue and Restructuring Guidelines. CNU is a fully State-owned Romanian company active in the exploitation of Romanian uranium mines and production of raw material transformed into fuel for nuclear power plants. The support it was given included a restructuring plan, grants, subsidies, debt write-off, debt-to-equity conversion, and an urgent rescue aid loan.
