State of the Energy Union Report for 2021: renewables EU’s main source of electricity

The Commission adopted its State of the Energy Union Report for 2021, taking stock of the progress made in the implementation of the European energy and climate policies, one year after the adoption of the European Climate Law and two years after the launch of the  European Green Deal.

The Report concludes that renewables (38%) overtook fossil fuels (37%) as the number one power source in the EU for the first time in 2020, and identifies a number of encouraging trends in the clean energy transition. 9 EU Member States have already phased out coal, 13 others have committed to a phase-out date, and 4 are considering possible timelines.
