Sustainable Finance: Commission launches public consultation

An announcement has been made by the European Commission today that it has launched a public consultation on how to determine what economic activities can qualify as environmentally sustainable.

A sustainable EU economy has been on the agenda since 2015 and 2016, as noted in the preamble of the EU’s Taxonomy Regulation. That Regulation sets out that the ‘criteria for determining whether an economic activity qualifies as environmentally sustainable should be harmonised at Union level in order to remove barriers to the functioning of the internal market with regard to raising funds for sustainability projects, and to prevent the future emergence of barriers to such projects’, noting that harmonisation would facilitate access to cros
