Council extends sanctions on Nicaragua until October 2026

Yesterday, the Council of the EU decided to extend its restrictive measures on Nicaragua for another year, now set to remain in place until 15 October 2026.

The sanctions were first introduced in October 2019, seeking to address the ongoing deterioration of human rights, democracy and rule of law in Nicaragua, after the Council had repeatedly expressed concerns about the developments in the country.

These sanctions target 21 individuals and 3 entities, involving asset freezes and a ban on making funds available to those listed. Affected individuals also face travel bans, prohibiting entry or transit through EU territories.
