Op-Ed: “The Mobility Package Judgment: towards a more socially and environmentally responsible Internal Market for Road Transports?”

On 4 October, the Court of Justice delivered its long-awaited judgment on several actions for annulment brought by Central and Eastern European Member States against the EU’s ‘mobility package’ (joined cases C-541/20 to C-555/20). The ruling illustrates contemporary tensions between fundamental (economic) freedoms and non-economic objectives, as well as among the non-economic objectives themselves. This Op-Ed assesses a shift in priority that has occurred at the EU level and reflects on the questions that remain open.
